We are living in very precarious times. We are faced with many dangers as we walk with our Lord(Matthew 24:4-5). In Christ Jesus we are all responsible to test the spirits to see if they are of God (1 John 4:1-3) and to test all teachings by the Word of God (Acts 17:11).
Satan and his legions of demons seek to destroy and attack the church through false teachers and ungodly philosophies. He seems to have engineered an all-out assault on the people of God today.
John MacArthur, in the book "Fool's Gold" says: "In an age of open mindedness, too many believers have forfeited biblical clarity and exchanged it for a life of confusion and compromise. They accept too much with too little discernment. But God's Word makes it clear that not everything that glitters is true gold; doctrinal error abounds at every turn, the temptation to embrace it is great, and the stakes involved are eternal. God calls us, as His people, to distinguish what's good from what's bad. And that's why we need biblical discernment."
It is the duty of every Christian, not just the pastors and elders, to examine everything and follow the biblical command to cling to what is good and reject what is evil.
The Bible is the only reliable source by which we can evaluate any message claiming to be truth from God.
James 1:5 (ESV)says "If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him."
Scriptures teach consistently that faith comes through the proclamation of the gospel, not through good works. Christ himself was not arrested and arraigned because he was trying to restore family values or feed the poor...The mounting ire of the religious leaders toward Jesus coalesced around him making himself equal with God and forgiving sins in his own person, directly, over against the temple and its sacrificial system.
